October 29, 2021

News

The Residents of Killanny House in Castleross completed their project ‘A Memory of Water’, and the exhibition opened in the Iontas Theatre in Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan on Friday 29th of October. This will stay in the Iontas for four weeks, enabling the public to view the amazing work. It will then be showcased in the Community Centre of Castleross for all to enjoy. This was an amazing multi-sensory project, conceived by Iontas Community Artist in Residence Orlagh Meegan Gallagher, and some of Orlagh’s own pieces are also on exhibit. Due to Covid restrictions, Orlagh worked remotely with our residents, meeting our Castleross Activities Coordinator Joan each week to deliver materials and instructions for each session.

It was a truly immersive experience that brought so much joy to our Residents. It was so much more than an art activity. It was a process and a journey that explored all the senses through touch, sight, and sound. Getting old is a challenge for many, and dealing with other obstacles that may occur along the way like a dementia or a physical or cognitive impairment can add to this challenge. Our ethos in Castleross is to look beyond these challenges and see the person, and focus on what they can do rather than what they can’t do, irrespective of age or condition. We encourage the best from those living in our care, and this project and this exhibition has helped us to appreciate all we CAN do.
